After School Clubs

STEAMwork Labs brings hands-on learning and imaginative projects to students of all ages. Our clubs are designed to inspire a love for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through exciting literature themed activities.

  • Grades K-2 meet Wednesdays 2:30-3:30
  •  Grades 3-5 meet Thursdays 3:00-4:00

Each club includes a student portfolio to document their learning, hands-on creations to take home, an inspiring guest speaker, and a culminating showcase where students can celebrate and share their work.

Step through the looking glass and into a world where creativity, engineering, and imagination come together!

In this whimsical, hands-on STEAM workshop, students will journey into the fantastical world of Alice in Wonderland while developing their engineering and design skills. Inspired by the Mad Hatter's unforgettable tea party, students will design and create their own imaginative tea party hats and sets, transforming their ideas into unique works of wearable art.

Along the way, young creators will explore the foundations of costume design, and Lino cut printmaking. Students will experiment with patterns, textures, shapes, and visual storytelling as they learn how designers and engineers bring fantastical ideas to life.

Through hands-on challenges and creative exploration, students will practice the engineering design process—imagining, planning, building, testing, and improving their creations. Whether they're designing an extraordinary hat, constructing a whimsical tea party set, or creating their own Lino prints on fabric, students will be encouraged to think creatively, solve problems, and make their ideas come to life.

City of the Future

What will the world look like hundreds—or even thousands—of years from now?

Step into the world of H.G. Wells' The Time Machine and become a futuristic engineer, architect, and inventor! In this imaginative, hands-on STEAM workshop, students will explore the possibilities of the future while developing their creativity, engineering, and design skills.

After traveling through time, students will arrive in a world unlike anything they have ever seen. Their mission? Design and build a city of the future!

Working as teams of futuristic architects and engineers, students will imagine how people might live, work, travel, and communicate in the future. They will design and construct their own futuristic environments, exploring creative solutions to challenges that cities may face as technology, populations, and environments change.

Students will use the engineering design process to brainstorm, sketch, build, test, and improve their creations. They might design flying transportation, towering skyscrapers, underground cities, renewable energy systems, robot helpers, futuristic homes, or entirely new technologies that don't exist today.

Throughout the workshop, students will learn about architecture, engineering, and urban planning as they transform their ideas into a collaborative futuristic world.

Through the Wardrobe

Step through the wardrobe and into the magical world of Narnia!

In this immersive, hands-on STEAM workshop inspired by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, students will explore the intersection of engineering, creativity, art, and design as they take on challenges inspired by the magical world of Narnia.

Students will have the opportunity to design and create their own portal to Narnia, imagining how they might build a gateway between two worlds. They will also enter the royal armory to design and construct their own fantasy weapon prop, using safe, age-appropriate materials and engineering principles to create a unique piece inspired by Narnian characters and stories. To complete their transformation into Narnian royalty, students will design and build their own crown fit for a King or Queen of Narnia.

Throughout the workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of prop making and design, exploring how artists, engineers, costume designers, and set designers bring fictional worlds to life. They'll practice brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, building, and refining their creations while making connections between storytelling and the STEAM disciplines.

Students will:

  • Design and build their own portal inspired by the wardrobe
  • Create a safe fantasy weapon prop using creative design and engineering
  • Design and construct a crown fit for Narnian royalty

Keys to the Garden

What would you do if you discovered a forgotten garden hidden behind a locked door?

Step into the enchanting world of Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden in this hands-on STEAM workshop where students will explore the connections between nature, engineering, science, and creative design.

Inspired by Mary Lennox's discovery of the mysterious garden, students will become garden designers and engineers on a mission to bring a forgotten space back to life. They will explore what plants need to grow and thrive before designing and creating their own secret garden. Students will use their creativity and problem-solving skills to plan the layout of their garden, choosing plants, pathways, special features, and spaces for the animals that call their garden home.

Students will also take on the role of habitat designers as they create a special birdhouse for Robin, the friendly robin who helps Mary discover the secret garden. They'll learn about bird habitats and consider how the size, shape, materials, and placement of a birdhouse can help provide a safe home for birds.

Throughout the workshop, students will explore the engineering design process as they brainstorm, sketch, build, test, and improve their creations. Through hands-on challenges, they'll discover how science and engineering can work together with art and imagination to transform an ordinary space into something extraordinary.
